Francis P. Blair was a pioneer in the founding of the Republican party and served President Abraham Lincoln in an informal capacity many times. It was Blair who offered R.E.Lee the command of the Union army at the outset of the Civil War. He also served as a go-between Lincoln and Jefferson Davis in trying to end the conflict.
